New course for September 2023 - BTEC Applied Science
In order to prepare for the changing landscape of Post-16 qualifications, from September 2023 we will be offering: Pearson: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science. (Qualification number: 601/7436/5)

The Applied Science course will replace the Health and Social Care course and is intended to be an Applied General qualification for post-16 students wanting to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education, and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to one A level and makes up a third of a typical study programme, alongside other A level or vocational qualifications at level 3. This qualification is supported by a range of universities and taken alongside other qualifications it can fulfil the entry requirements for several science-related higher education courses, including biomedical, forensic and sports science, as well as nursing.

Applied Science focuses on the practical application of scientific knowledge. This course will equip students with a broad range of scientific skills and knowledge that are highly sought after by employers. It will provide the opportunity to explore different areas of science such as biology, chemistry, physics, and environmental science.

Applicants who chose to study Health and Social Care should contact us to discuss their subject preferences as soon as possible.

Who can apply for Prendergast Sixth Form?

We welcome applications from Year 11 students from the Leathersellers' Federation of Schools and from external applicants. For information about our curriculum offer and entry requirements, please see our 'KS5 Subject Handbook 2023-25'.

At Prendergast Sixth Form we strongly recommend that students have a GCSE Average Points Score (APS) of at least 5.2 if they wish to study A Levels.  This is in addition to the specific entry requirements for each subject.  If a student does not achieve an APS of 5.2, they will be able to follow a BTEC programme.  BTEC courses require an APS of 4.2, along with the entry requirements for the specific subjects.  Students need to have achieved at least a grade 4 in Mathematics and English Language to enrol in the Sixth Form.
