English

The English curriculum is centred around developing fluent readers and writers who are confident, accurate and literate communicators. We aim to develop critical thinkers who are able to articulate their own viewpoint whilst engaging sensitively with the perspectives of others.

Our curriculum consistently provides opportunities for oracy and self-expression and promotes the habit of reading widely and often, with the intention of creating life-long readers for both pleasure and information. The English Department encourages creativity when writing for a range of purposes and audiences.

Students at Prendergast School will be equipped to independently analyse and critically interpret a range of texts across genres and forms with an awareness of the canon and its construction. The English curriculum intent is to impart a deep knowledge and understanding of relevant social, historical, biographical and literary contexts and how they influence construction and reception of texts.
